Work-Around for a Hung Server Manager

All too often while working in Server Manager, you will receive java heap errors and Server Manager will become unresponsive. When this happens you will see the following error message on the screen.

“Java Lang Out Of Memory: Java Heap Space”

To resolve this issue, follow this simple work-around. First, close your web browser and open up Windows Services.

We’ll maximize this window, and sort the services by Name. Scroll down, and look for the SM Management Console service. We’ll stop this service by clicking the Stop button in the toolbar above.

It may take a few minutes for the service to stop. If you receive an error message like the one on screen it can be closed and ignored.

Next, we’ll open Task Manager by right clicking on the Taskbar. We’ll sort by image name, and look for any java.exe (Pronounced “Java dot E-X-E”) processes.

If there are any java.exe processes, highlight them, click End Process, and then Yes to confirm. If there are any additional java.exe processes, repeat this step until none remain and then close out of task manager.

When all of the java.exe processes have been ended, it is OK to restart the Server Manager service. We’ll go back into Windows Services, and start the service using the Start button in the toolbar above.

Make sure that the service is at a status of Started.

Now that the Server Manager service has been restarted, things should be working again. We’ll log in to test, and we are now able to navigate around server manager without receiving any errors.
